What we do

Everything we do can be bespoke to meet your particular needs, budget and timescale, so we work closely with you to agree a suitable approach. We also provide training and seminars open to the public.

You can choose from a long-term engagement that resolves a range of issues over months or years, to a single half-day session designed to focus your senior team and help them reach a quick decision on a topical issue.

We often mix and match consultancy with training, so you benefit from long-term knowledge transfer as part of the package. You can book us to conduct a study, organise a conference or embark on a joint project. We also help with implementation – as you can imagine, the possibilities are almost endless!

Consultancy

Our consultancy helps you identify and understand which issues are most likely to arise in the future of your organisation, and to seek solutions or grasp opportunities. Our usual consultancy process would involve:

We have world class experience of many Futures Thinking techniques including horizon scanning, scenario planning, visioning, and many more. We understand political, international and regulatory risk, economic uncertainty, social and cultural change, and the opportunities of technology for our clients

We firmly believe that our role is to enable change, so although we will communicate results in documents and presentations as required, our main goal to ensure engagement of the decision-makers, we work closely with your team and stakeholders.

Research helps identify issues and drivers that affect you. We work alongside specialists in modelling, regulation, and country economies to produce research reports that will inform your decision-making about the future.

We have a number of case studies that will help you understand the range of consultancy work we undertake. There is also a list of our clients

Training

If you are looking how to do scenario planning and foresight, we can help. We have run bespoke in-house courses for strategy teams for some time. However, for individuals looking to get up to speed on strategic foresight, taking part in an open course can be the answer.

We are now offering several distinct styles of course:

  • A half-day “Introduction to Futures Thinking” aimed at those wishing to understand the basics and decide how the approach might work in their organisation;
  • A “hands-on” two-day workshop for strategists where you learn to build scenarios yourself
  • Two day boot camps in London and Oxford on futures techniques
  • Webinars on a range of issues
  • One day courses on specific topics of risk or futures

For more details please go to the our Training section.

Events

We also run occasional events, which are open by invitation, on specific topics of future interest. At these we will use specific techniques to analyse the issues, sometimes by presentation, sometimes in workshops. They are particularly useful in demonstating the power of futures techniques in real time, as well as providing useful insight into current topics. if our current offerings of futures events is interesting, please contact us for an invitation. We also run occasional webinars. See our events page

Board Reviews and Corporate Governance

SAMI have carried out a number of Board Reviews, working with the Boards of organisations across different sectors. As specialists in strategic futures and scenario planning, we help Boards to look at their performance in the context of their strategic direction and goals, where they are now, and their past experience. All our reviews have been confidential due to the sensitive nature of how we work and so are our recommendations.

Our approach is to tailor each review to the Governance Framework and culture of the organisation, and specific issues facing it. Often such reviews arise from concerns raised by non-executive members and the Chair.

We work both with the Board collectively, and with the CEO and key Directors, using open structured questions, and covering perceptions, expectations and feelings, as well as the hard facts. We also underpin this with on-line questionnaires covering more detailed issues. Depending on the circumstances and sensitivities in each specific case, we can also go out to external customers, stakeholders and experts for their insights. We use a “Chatham House Rule” approach for all we have contact with, because we find that people give their opinions more freely if their comments are strictly non-attributable. That said, if there are clear divergences between different groups of respondents then we will highlight them so long as their sources cannot be identified.

When we have completed our work we produce a confidential report and often run a workshop with the Board to explore what we have heard and our findings. A successful Review leads to a fresh focus for the Board and its Exec Directors on the things that really matter. We often find that before our review they don’t get the time they require because of the day-to-day agenda – maybe a strategic issue, or a long-overlooked “elephant in the room”. In addition they benefit from the independent view that we provide.

A successful Review will restore clarity about roles, relationships and a shared strategic purpose.

If you are a Board member and think your Board could benefit from our approach do contact us for a confidential discussion about what this might involve. You can use info@samiconsulting.co.uk or go direct to our specialist Fellows. They are David Lye, Richard Walsh and Alan Woods.
